Balloon Garland Cake Topper made with pink and gold miniature balloons, on top of a pink cake on a pink cake stand.

To make this balloon topper, I knew I wanted different sizes of balloons, simply smaller than I'd ever seen commercially bachelor.  I could brand the 5" balloons (the smallest I could observe to order) work as the Big balloons in this tutorial, simply the smaller balloons had me stumped until I came upward with the idea of using 260 balloons.  That's a type of balloon 2" in diameter and threescore" long.  Y'all might know them as twisting balloons, or airship fauna balloons.  They were PERFECT for these mini balloon garland block toppers!  I also experimented with h2o balloons, but while the size of those was dainty and minor, those balloons are designed to be flimsy and break, so they did not hold air near also every bit latex balloons.

This modern cake topper really has wow factor, particularly if you add some fresh flowers and greenery to the balloon garland.

I'll get to the step past step instructions presently, I hope--there were just so many pretty pictures I took of these darling cake toppers!  I held myself dorsum in sharing, I swear.

How to Make a Balloon Garland Cake Topper

Materials for making a Mini Balloon Garland Cake Topper.

Mini Airship Garland Block Topper Materials

  • five" balloons (2 or three)
  • Balloon twisting balloons (too called 260 balloons).  You'll need about six.
  • eighteen" length of wire
  • balloon pump
  • two food-safe wooden skewers
  • Minor flowers and greenery (or tiny artificial flowers and greenery), optional

Five mini balloons made from a single 260 twisting balloon.

I consistently got six mini balloons out of each twisting balloon, and I used about 30 miniature balloons for each airship garland block topper.  Then you only demand five or six of the long balloons to make this project.

I mostly used regular Qualatex brand twisting balloons (an splendid, reliable make), just I too bought some metal 260s and absolutely loved how those looked mixed in with the regular balloons.

Miniature Balloon Garland Instructions

cut 260 twisting balloon on the nozzle of a balloon pump to make miniature balloons.

Stretch the 260 balloon before inflating.  Apply a airship pump to inflate the balloon.  Over again, I get to the pros at Qualatex for balloon pumps--they make a high quality product.  It'due south so much nicer than using flimsy, super-inexpensive pumps.

You demand a balloon pump for two reasons:

  • First, 260s are Really REALLY hard to accident up with your rima oris!
  • Second, they're impossible to blow up with your mouth after you lot've cut off the rolled end of the balloon.  Just as yous can see in the photo above, y'all tin insert the nozzle of the pump in the trimmed balloon and inflate it again easily to create more mini balloons.

Inflate just a small corporeality of the balloon.  Let out any excess air until yous accept a bubble the size of the miniature balloon you want.  Tie off the open cease, leaving yourself near an inch of backlog balloon at the tied end.

Pull the two tails of the balloon together, and tie in a double knot.  Cutting off excess.  That'southward all in that location is to information technology!  Teeny tiny balloons!  Vary the airship size, making some a little bit larger, some smaller, to create texture and interest in the finished balloon garland.  Just like yous would making the big kind.

The largest balloons--the ones that mimic the wait of those big, circular 36" balloons in the regular airship garlands--are just normal 5" balloons.  Simply inflate the 5" balloons virtually halfway, and squeeze all the air to the end of the balloon then the color will look correct, and tie off.  Trim off most of the neck of the balloon.

If you desire a more pastel version of a 5" balloon, you can put colored balloons inside white balloons and blow them upwards together.  A balloon pump is essential if you're doing this.  And fifty-fifty with a airship pump, this technique did not piece of work with the narrow 260 balloons--I could not get the doubled upwardly ones to inflate at all.  Only with five" and larger balloons, it's a great way to create extra visual involvement and color variation in a balloon garland.

Assembling the Miniature Balloon Garland Cake Topper

Standard airship garlands are typically made with either a airship strip ( also called balloon tape--a plastic strip with holes in it specifically made for making airship garlands) or angling line.  But for this project, wire was the perfect choice.

You don't demand a particularly thick gauged wire for this craft project; I used 24 guess silvery colored arts and crafts wire.  I likewise experimented with floral wire, and it worked beautifully (and is less expensive than a lot of other arts and crafts wires).

To make the mini balloon garland, simply slide the tiny balloons on the wire.  As you can see in the photograph above and in the tutorial video, the way I fabricated the smaller balloons makes it incredibly easy to string the balloons on the wire!  To attach the largest balloons (the ones fabricated with the 5" balloons), I just poked the wire through the tail of the balloon.  You could also wrap the wire around the knot of the balloon a few times; that would help with the positioning of the balloons later on.

Wrap the remaining wire around the ends of two wooden dowels.  I used a 12-inch skewer for this project because I had them on hand already and I knew they were nutrient safe.  You could also employ pretty paper straws.

You tin can also attach the wooden skewer in the middle of the garland, like I did with the pinkish and blue/dark-green versions.  You can just wrap the wire around the stick a couple times, or attach it with a low temperature gum gun.

Tin I Make a Airship Garland Cake Topper the Day Before?

Yes, admittedly!  In fact, in this photograph, the pinkish balloon garland was four days old, the rainbow airship garland was 5 days old, and the blue/greenish mini airship garland was brand new.  The balloons do start to oxidize a bit (get more cloudy) and lose a chip of air, only with these balloons and this technique, you tin can definitely make your cake topper a day or two in advance.  Obviously, if yous're going to add fresh flowers and greenery, add those correct before the event.

How to Add Flowers to a Airship Garland DIY Cake Topper

Have your cake topper to the next level by adding greenery!  I admittedly love the await of gorgeous big balloon garlands when they include flowers--it looks so elegant!  And so I went in my lawn with a pair of clippers and picked any tiny flowers I found.  The "vine" is actually oregano from my herb garden!

Y'all can just advisedly place the flowers, nestling the stems between balloons, simply that's a little precarious.  A low temperature glue gun turned out to exist the perfect solution to tack the flowers in place.  Yes, you can hot glue things to balloons without popping them if you use a depression temperature glue gun!

You lot can also employ artificial flowers.  Effort looking for miniature silk flowers designed for card-making, scrapbooking, or doll houses to become the right calibration.
